We are upgrading how you access your KIPP NYC laptop. We are moving away from old "Active Directory" logins to Google Credential Provider for Windows (GCPW).
To make this transition as seamless as possible, our Tech Team is running a migration script that handles the heavy lifting of moving your files and settings to your new Google-backed profile.
1. The Migration Process: What to Expect
You don't need to manually move your files. Our team will trigger a migration script on your device.
The Trigger: You may be asked to leave your computer powered on and connected to the internet overnight or during a specific window.
The Script: This script finds your old "AD" profile (where your Desktop and Documents currently live) and re-assigns them to your KIPP NYC Google identity.
The Restart: Once the script finishes, your computer will restart. When it comes back up, the old login screen will be replaced by the new Google sign-in interface.
2. Your First Login with Google
Once the migration script has finished its work, you will log in using your Google credentials and Google Authenticator.
Click "Add Work Account": On the bottom-left of your Windows login screen, click the "Add Work Account" button (look for the Google "G" icon).
Sign in with Google: A Google sign-in window will appear. Enter your full @kippnyc.org email address.
Enter Your Password: Use your standard KIPP NYC Google password.
2-Step Verification: You will be prompted for a security code. Open the Google Authenticator app on your phone and enter the 6-digit code for your KIPP account.
Welcome to your Desktop: Because the migration script already linked your data, you should see your familiar wallpaper, folders, and files exactly where you left them.
3. Staying Synced
Now that your computer login is powered by Google:
One Identity: Your Windows password and Google password are now one and the same.
Changing Passwords: If you ever need to change your password, do it through your Google Account settings. Your laptop will automatically recognize the new password the next time it's online.
Offline Access: You can still log into your laptop without Wi-Fi (like on a plane). However, every few days, the system will require you to connect to the internet to "re-verify" your account with a fresh Google Authenticator code.
4. Troubleshooting the Migration
"I logged in, but my files are missing." – If you see a "temporary profile" or a blank desktop, the script may still be finishing its work. Please let us know what you see.
"The Google Sign-in window is blank." – This usually means your Wi-Fi isn't connected yet. Check the Wi-Fi icon in the bottom-right of the login screen to ensure you are connected to KNYCRT-X.
"Authenticator code isn't working." – Ensure the time on your phone is set to "Automatic." If the clock is off by even a minute, the codes won't match.
