While Google Docs’ real-time spelling suggestions are helpful for drafting, you may need to disable them for spelling assessments, vocabulary quizzes, or specific creative writing exercises.
Follow these steps to hide those familiar red underlines while a student is working in a document.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Open the Document: Open any Google Doc where you wish to hide suggestions.
Access the View Menu: Click on the View tab in the top menu toolbar.
Toggle Suggestions: Look for the option labeled Show spelling suggestions.
If there is a checkmark next to it, the suggestions are On.
Click it once to uncheck the box and turn the suggestions Off.
Key Details for Classroom Management
Document-Specific: Unlike Microsoft Word (which often changes settings for the whole application), this setting in Google Docs is often tied to the specific user's view of that document.
Grammar Suggestions: If you also want to hide the blue grammar underlines, you can find the Show grammar suggestions toggle right under the spelling option in the same View menu.
Manual Check: Students can still manually run a full spell-check by navigating to Tools > Spelling and grammar > Spelling and grammar check, even if the "as-you-type" suggestions are hidden.
Staff Tip: If you are preparing a template for an exam, you can set these view options yourself before sharing the document with students via Google Classroom. However, students may still have the ability to turn them back on, so we recommend a quick "screens up" check before the assessment begins!
